Anatomy of the Spine

The spinal column is the body's main support structure. Its thirty-three bones, called vertebrae, are divided into five regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal.

Neck Pain

Neck pain, also called cervical pain, is pain between shoulders and head. This pain can be radicular neck pain, which shoots into other areas, including the arms and shoulders, or axial neck pain, which is felt mostly in the neck.

Neck pain can have many causes, and muscle strains are the most common. Bad posture can affect your neck, as can sitting in one position for too long or sleeping with your neck in a bad position.

Injuries can cause neck pain too. Whiplash after a car accident, falls, and sports injuries can all be responsible.

Back Pain

Medical conditions like spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and herniated discs can cause neck pain as well. Dr. Khamsi treats all back pain, whether chronic or acute. Pain can range from a constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain. The pain can radiate down your legs. Bending, walking, twisting, lifting, or standing might make it worse.

Disc Herniation

Discs are like cushions between the spinal bones and are designed to absorb shocks and create some mobility. Bulging or herniated discs (slipped discs) and ruptured discs can cause lumbar pain. If a disc bulges or ruptures, it could compress the nearby nerves, potentially leading to irritation and pain.

Pinched Nerve

Pinched nerves occur when surrounding tissues place too much pressure on the nerve, causing pain, tingling, numbness and weakness. This pinching can be caused by a herniated disc, thickening of the ligaments, spinal instability, bone spurs, overgrowth of the joints, or in many cases a combination of these factors. This pinching often causes radiating pain down the arms or legs.

Sciatica

Radiating pain down the legs is also commonly known as sciatica. This pain often starts in the low back and travels down to the hips, buttocks, and legs. Although pain can go away on its own, if it continues or is severe enough to interfere with activities of daily living, surgical intervention may be required to relieve the pressure on the nerve.

Spinal Stenosis

Another condition Dr. Khamsi treats is spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the space available for the spinal cord or nerve roots for various reasons. This narrowing in turn, causes pressure/pinching of the nerves. In most cases this condition is caused by wear and tear over time. This condition can present in many ways such as pain shooting down the arms or legs, heaviness of the legs, difficulty walking, poor balance or difficulty using the hands.

Cancers & Tumors

Cancers and tumors can also cause problems in the spine. Whether the tumors are benign or malignant, there are several courses of action that can help you get relief from the symptoms you may experience.

SI Joint Dysfunction

If the joints at the bottom of the spine connecting the sacrum to the pelvis move improperly, you may suffer from SI (sacroiliac) joint dysfunction. It can cause pain in the lower back and legs, or it can lead to inflammation of the joints. There are conservative and more invasive procedures that can treat this issue.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis in children and adults happens when there’s an abnormal curvature to the spine that can interfere with movement, impacting posture and potentially causing pain. In some cases, this condition can affect activities or daily living and surgical intervention may be helpful. Dr. Khamsi offers surgery for spinal deformity. This surgery often requires fusion surgery to stabilize the spine and fix the curvature by utilizing screws and rods.
