Lumbar discectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part of the disc in the lower back that has bulged/herniated and that may be putting pressure on spinal nerves.
Vertebrae make up your spinal column, and the spinal cord runs down the center of this column. Between each vertebra is a gel-like disc that offers cushioning and prevents the bones from rubbing together.
Sometimes, a disc’s wall can break down, and the disc’s inner part can bulge out. This leads to a narrowing of the spinal canal, and pressure on the nerves. Some of the symptoms associated with a herniated disc are:
Lumbar discectomy is a minimally invasive surgery which involves a small incision over the area of the herniated disc. Often a microscope is used for better visualization of the anatomy and a small “key hole” is created within the bone in order to get access to the nerves and the disc. At this point the nerve is gently retracted to the side, the disc is exposed and the herniated material is removed ensuring the nerves are completely free.
In the majority of cases, this is an outpatient surgery and most patients go home a few hours after the procedure is done. In many cases the pain relief is immediate, though some of the symptoms such as numbness and weakness may take much longer to improve.
