Microdiscectomy

A microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive procedure performed to relieve pain caused by a herniated disc pressing on an adjacent nerve. During this surgery, Dr. Khamsi removes small fragments of disc, ligament, and bone through a small incision, utilizing a microscope to free the nerves.

Lumbar Laminectomy

One of the most common procedures performed is lumbar laminectomy. This is required when there is pinching of the nerves secondary to stenosis (tightening of the space available for the nerves). Procedure involved a midline incision, followed by the removal of parts of the bone, as well as ligament and fat that is pinching the nerves.

In certain cases, if there is spinal instability, or if the stenosis is so severe that thorough decompression of the nerves will cause instability, fusion surgery will be required. This will involve insertion of screws, rods and interbody devices to stabilize the region.

Decompression Surgery

In deformity cases requiring surgery, decompression and fusion surgery is performed at multiple levels. These surgeries normally involve utilization of many screws and long rods to help correct the deformity as much as is safely possible and help return the patient to normal function.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF)

In the neck, the most common surgery is Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF). The majority of cervical spine issues are secondary to disc herniations causing pinching of the spinal cord or the nerve roots going down to the shoulders, arms and hands. This surgery involves a small incision in the front of the neck. Then often a microscope is used to completely remove the herniated disc, directly observing the nerves to make sure they are completely free. Once the disc is removed and nerves are fully decompressed, a small spacer is inserted in the disc place and a small plate and screws are applied to keep things together.

Spinal Cord Stimulator

If non-surgical solutions have not provided pain relief, you may need a spinal cord stimulator. A spinal cord stimulator is an implanted device that sends electricity into the spinal cord to relieve pain. When you feel pain, you can send these low levels of electricity to the cord using a remote control.

SI Joint Fusion

One of the most under-diagnosed causes of pain is sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This can be treated with sacroiliac joint (SI joint) fusion which is a type of surgery that fuses the sacrum, the lowest part of the spine, with the iliac bone in the pelvis. This is a minimally invasive outpatient surgery during which Dr. Khamsi inserts specialized devices through a small incision to fuse the two bones together. If diagnosed and treated correctly, most patients experience significant relief in a fairly short period of time.

Spinal Cord Stimulation (Paddle Lead, Medtronic)

Spinal cord stimulation (also called SCS) uses electrical impulses to relieve chronic pain of the back, arms and legs. It is believed that electrical pulses prevent pain signals from being received by the brain. SCS candidates include people who suffer from neuropathic pain and for whom conservative treatments have failed.

Sacroiliac Joint Fusion (iFuse Implant System®)

If you have a painful damaged or diseased sacroiliac joint (we call it the "SI" joint), a fusion may help. With the iFuse System, your surgeon uses titanium implants to join your hip's ilium bone to the spine's sacrum. This may relieve the SI joint pain.

Scoliosis Surgery

If you have scoliosis or other spinal deformities, a surgical procedure may be the solution you need. Fusion surgery can help with scoliosis, offering curvature correction.

For children, growing systems surgery can also be helpful and can make it possible to delay fusion surgery. Growing systems surgery involves anchoring rods to the spine to help correct its curvature as the child grows.

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a procedure utilized in treatment of certain spinal fractures. It involves insertion of two cannulas through small incisions into the vertebral body. Then, a balloon is inflated within the vertebral body to try to reduce the fracture as much as possible. Finally, medical cement is injected to strengthen the bone.

Kyphoplasty (Balloon Vertebroplasty)

This minimally-invasive procedure repairs a vertebral compression fracture. It helps restore the spine's natural shape. Some patients experience rapid pain relief after the procedure.
